July 11th - when the rain starts !

Before leaving our home stay, Artur give us few advises about the monuments to see on our way to Mestia. Our first stop will be Kutaisi.

80km later, here we go. Kutaisi is the second largest city after Tbilisi. Since the government decided to move their parliament there, streets, building and shops are in construction, so roads are bad...

You cannot come to Kutaisi without seeing the magnificent Bragrati cathedral. From the 11th-century, it was rebuilt officially in 2012 after heavy damage ages ago.

We had a lunch not far from the Cathedral and the rain starts...Heavy rains...After lunch, the sun came back and we hit the road direction Mestia. 220km to do until tonight destination. Should be nice; at least 120km of mountains roads. So smile on the face, we gazzzzz until the junction where starts the small roads. At this time GPS indicate ` arriving in 120km`. Few kms later, the rains starts again and heavier. We can feel the impact of the drop hitting the jacket. It does not stay long until legs, gloves and boots are completely wet. We stopped on the side of the road to protect iPhone, driving license...The temperature dropped and with the wetness, it became a nightmare ride`s! Anyway we are here to powaaaa Georgia, no way to back up, Mestia is waiting for us. The last 25km were super hard. We were tired, cold, wet and no focusing anymore. The road gets super bad and it became hard to ride in this condition...We finally reached Mestia, found an hotel and by chance the sun shows up again, which allow us to take few pictures after the hot and well deserved shower.

Famous Svan defensive tower
Famous Svan defensive tower

The population is mostly Svans, a cultural and linguistic subgroup of Georgians. Despite its small size, the numbers of medieval monuments (churches and forts) are part of the Unesco classification.

The famous attraction here is the defensive tower. A typical Svan fortified dwelling consisted of a tower, an adjacent house and some other household structures encircles by defensive wall.

Thats why we came here ! History, culture, ride and Svan food !

Tomorrow, we are going to Batumi, town lying on the black sea just before the Turkish border.
